Well-Being Tip: Walk Your Way to Well-Being

In this week’s Well-Being Tip, we explore how walking can help bring your meditation practice into the world.

One of the things that makes the Healthy Minds Program app unique is the ability for our users to meditate in both a classic seated posture and on-the-go in active practices. It makes meditation and training your mind something you can do as part of your regular day, supporting a consistent habit. Some users practice while doing light housework, taking a shower, or even waiting in line. 

But if you’re just starting out with active practices, it’s tough to beat meditation while walking. Walking brings your practice into the world so you gain not just the benefits of guided meditation, but the benefits of fresh air and, depending on your location, the calming relaxation of nature.

Walking itself can support a healthy lifestyle in multiple ways:

  1. It counteracts the effects of weight-promoting genes;
  2. It curbs your sweet tooth;
  3. Reduces the risk of developing breast cancer;
  4. Eases joint pain; and
  5. Boosts immune functions

So start small – but focus on habit creation. For example, can you do a walking practice every morning before work? If you’re working with the Healthy Minds Program app – starting off with practices that help you tune into your surroundings will make the most of your walk. Practices like, “A Tour of the Senses,” or “Relaxing with the breath,” and other meditations in the Awareness pillar of the Healthy Minds Framework for Well-Being are a good way to be present with your surroundings as you walk.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of it, any of the Healthy Minds Program practices in the remaining pillars (Connection, Insight and Purpose) can be enriched with a walk. This doesn’t mean you have to abandon your meditation cushion, but if you’re struggling to find a moment to sit – give a walking practice a try and see how long you can keep it up.
