Millennial Money: Train Your Mind to Step Into Financial Well-Being

By The Healthy Minds Team

Shannah Compton Game sits down with Dr. Cortland Dahl to explore the power of meditation on financial wellbeing.

Shannah Compton Game is the creator and host of the podcast Millennial Money. Because money touches every aspect of our life, Shannah created a new language around money wellness, taking deep dives into how we can find balance in our hectic daily lives.

In this episode, Dr. Cortland Dahl explores how the research done at The Center for Healthy Minds shows that when we meditate and train our brains, there are unique patterns of brain activity that show the promise of transforming our minds.

It’s important to remember that meditation is something that you can do at any time, anywhere, and that even five minutes a day will have a significant impact on the way your brain operates. Dr. Dahl mentions that meditation is to the mind what exercise is to the body–meditation is training the mind.

A piece of the episode:

Shannah Compton Game prompts the questions: “How powerful is the mind when it comes to decision making and habit formation…and how can meditation practically provide some benefits to areas of our life we want to make better?”

Dr. Dahl responds saying that “our inner state of mind is so instrumental in shaping what we do and how we do it that if we don’t manage our own mind and emotions in a healthy way, it’s almost impossible to make healthy choices. When we learn to train our minds with meditation, we really start to tap into a source of wellbeing that is not so tied to external circumstances…we start equating our own happiness less with what we have and feel more comfortable in our skin. Another part of this is impulse control: the ability to notice an impulse and take a step back is a critically important skill to have.”
